Background

The b someone campaign

The b someone campaign was launched in 2009, the Year of Education in the Bradford District. The campaign aims to develop a culture of aspiration and achievement, positioning education and skills as priorities for the future economic and social wellbeing of the district.

Organisations across the district work together to deliver a wide range of learning and skills opportunities. b someone aims to maximise the benefit of these opportunities by co-ordinating and branding all the activities into a recognisable campaign that raises awareness amongst residents and businesses about the importance of education and skills for them as individuals and for the district as a whole.

The first strand of the campaign, b someone for your child’s future, focuses on parents, carers and the wider adult role in encouraging early learning through positive interaction with young children.

By focusing on four areas - reading, counting, cooking and playing outside - the campaign shows how we can all support and encourage children’s learning through our everyday activities. A simple visit to the shops, for example, brings with it a host of opportunities for counting and reading. Cooking a meal can encourage reading, measuring, and counting, as well as healthy eating. The second strand of the campaign, b someone for your future, focuses on the benefits for young people aged 13 to 19 taking responsibility for their own educational attainment and skills development, supported by parents, teachers, training providers, and local employers. The second strand was launched by the Leader of Bradford Council, Cllr Kris Hopkins, at the University of Bradford on 14th October.

We all want the best for young people in the district but we cannot do it alone. There are a variety of schools, colleges, universities, learning providers and other agencies which have the resources, skills, knowledge and understanding to help young people to achieve their full potential. The key message is that it is down to young people to b someone for your future. It’s about choices and taking control of your own destiny.

b someone is about children, young people and citizens of all ages being passionate about educational attainment and skills development for themselves and their families. It’s also an opportunity for employers and businesses to promote learning and skills in their workforce.
