Students from across Bradford are gearing up for an international debate in America.
The 30 secondary school pupils will tomorrow (FRI) hear which countries they will represent in the event next March when they will join other teenagers from all over the world at the Model United Nations Conference in New York.
Organised by the Bradford-based Schools Linking Network (SLN), which helps develop links between schools to encourage young people to explore, the group will take part in a panel tomorrow to discuss Climate Change - Time for Action at Kala Sangam, St Peter's House, in preparation for the big debate.
The group is also raising £40,000 to pay for their trip and member Peter Barusevicus, a year-11 student at St Bede's Catholic Grammar School, Highgate, Heaton, is setting off on a sponsored bike ride from Steeton around the West Yorkshire border on Saturday, 7 November.
Other members are also holding fundraising events.
Coun Michael Kelly, the Council's Executive Member for Services to Children and Young People, said: "The MUN debate is an excellent way for young people from Bradford to represent our district and our country in this international competition.
"The invaluable experience will help them to develop important skills such as research, critical analysis and communication as well as helping them to understand about life in other parts of the world and to make friends from other countries.
"It will be an exciting venture for them all and it also reflects the district's b someone campaign which is all about encouraging young people to take responsibility for their future and to help them fulfil their potential."
SLN Operations Manager Mariclaire Langstaff said: "The MUN supports students' development as active citizens with a keen understanding of their individual and collective identities.
"The SLN is working towards building the skills, confidence and aspirations of these individuals so they are equipped to face and tackle challenges that come their way in a positive manner."
"The Bradford students are from different communities and backgrounds and working together they have already formed close friendships with peers they may not have normally mixed with.
"The whole project is extremely beneficial for the young people - and the district - and we hope people will come forward and support their fundraising efforts."
