B-talented volunteer Maz tells her story

Maz B-talented young volunteer Name is Maryam but I prefer to be called Maz, I am 19 years of age and I live in Great Horton Bradford. I live with my mother and my sisters and the occasional niece or nephew which ever one decides to stay over for a couple of nights. I have a passion for sport so through out school I was involved in various sporting activities and sports days. I studied geography, sports education, graphic design and ICT In school for GCSE. At A level I then went on to studying psychology, sport and English Literature. These three subjects have helped me understand life and how people operate, and why they do things the way they do which has lead me to volunteering today.

Before B-talent I was studying sport in Bradford College and was delivering sessions every Tuesday and Thursday to a disabled group from another college or school. This inspired me to become a volunteer, because giving someone the opportunity to participate in an activity is a big thing. It could improve their confidence or they could just enjoy being able to take part in general. It’s about giving the person an extra something for them to take back and learn from and giving them motivation or confidence to participate again or get involved again.

I hope to get a direction out of volunteering to help me understand where I want to be in five years time and what area I would like to work in. I have a rough idea but am in need of more experience to fully understand and know where I want to be. I hope to go to university and maybe combine sports and youth work and study a community sport course or sport and youth work in a sandwich course. I have a full time job and be able to stand on my own two feet with my head held high.
